The amount and quality of information available from network information services have been increasing considerably in recent years. User's satisfaction with an information service depends highly on the quality of a system used to retrieve information.
In this paper we present an overview of network information retrieval (NIR) system design, describe and discuss several notable current systems and projects in the field, identify the key problems with present offerings, and propose directions of future research work.
